House Spirit!

Student and staff House spirit was in full flight during our House Athletics carnival, the first to feature all six Houses. Participation in athletic and novelty events was pleasingly high, and great voice was heard during the House chant competitions. Our Year 12 students led by their great example through leadership of their House chants, the passion for their houses evident in their creative house-colour themed dress up鈥�with some even racing in full costume! We were entertained by over 10 different music groups on the day to complement an already positive atmosphere. Even the weather blessed us with cloud cover to reduce the predicted heat and the rain stayed away until at light smattering only on the very last race.

House Spirit is also the theme for our Staff Spirituality Day to start Term 2. All staff will be engaged in learning more deeply about their House patrons - Caroline Chisholm, St Dominic de Guzman, St Mary MacKillop, Daniel Mannix, Sr Irene McCormack & Blessed Edmund Rice - to build the charism of their House, followed by activities to build House team spirit united as teaching and non-teaching staff.

Parent and Community Engagement (PACE) Network

Our PACE Network held its AGM recently and we鈥檙e pleased to announce both the new President, Nell Lopez, and an influx of new members to refresh and revitalise this important element of our community and parent involvement. We look forward to the new connections and contributions that the 2026 PACE Committee will make and encourage all parents and guardians to consider contributing to the team or even just one event by keeping an eye out for articles in the Lighthouse or contacting pace-president@aquinas.vic.edu.au

Easter Blessings: Peace

In this year鈥檚 Easter Sunday Gospel (Jn 20:19-31), the first words of the risen Christ to the disciples are both powerful and simple:

Peace be with you.

We join Pope Leo XIV鈥檚 in praying for this peace in our current, tumultuous world, using the words of Pope Francis:

Let us pray that world leaders choose the path of dialogue and diplomacy instead of violence.

Grant us peace, teach us peace; guide our steps in the way of peace.

Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation.

In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words 鈥渄ivision鈥�, 鈥渉atred鈥� and 鈥渨ar鈥� be banished from the heart of every man and woman.

Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands.

Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be 鈥渂rother鈥� and 鈥渟ister鈥�, and our way of life will always be that of: Shalom, Peace, Salaam!

Student Progress Interviews - Reminder

A reminder that next week we will be conducting the Student Progress Interviews which will allow parents to meet with subject teachers. To ensure the best meeting environment for families, we have made provision for in-person meetings and online meetings. Meetings will be held on the following dates at the conclusion of Term1:


Wednesday April 1 - In person/onsite between 2-8pm

Thursday April 2 - Online between 9am-3.30pm

Students will finish at 1pm on Wednesday April 1 and Thursday April 2 is a student free day.

Bookings can still be made through the Parent Access Module (PAM) using the username and password you have already set up. We ask that you only make one booking per teacher even if the teacher has your child for two or more classes. 西瓜视频 expects, wherever possible, that the student will attend the interview with their Parent/Guardian.

In person meetings on Wednesday April 1 will be in the I building (Senior Years Building)

The meetings on Thursday April 2 will occur by video conferencing using Google Meet which can be accessed through PAM.

All details are explained in the Parent Teacher Module in PAM. The process for booking interviews remains the same - that is to log onto PAM and book through there (instructions are below).

To understand the progress of your son or daughter prior to the meeting you can investigate all of the teacher input through the Learning Areas menu for each of your children.

The 西瓜视频 College School wide Digest will be emailed out today, 27 March, that should inform you of the areas for discussion at the interviews. It is important that you have read this prior to meeting with teachers as it will provide the most up to date information regarding student progress.

 VERTICAL PASTORAL AT AQUINAS

As we reach the end of Term 1, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the positive impact of our new vertical House system. In a relatively short time, we have seen a significant shift in the way students connect, engage and support one another across the College.

One of the most noticeable strengths of the new structure has been the sense of belonging it has fostered. Students are building meaningful relationships across year levels, with older students stepping naturally into mentoring roles and younger students benefiting from this guidance and support. This has helped to create a stronger sense of community within each House, where students feel known, supported and connected.

Our daily Mentor time has also played a key role in strengthening these relationships. The consistency of meeting each morning has provided students with a reliable point of connection and has allowed staff to better understand and support the needs of those in their care. Our THRIVE social and emotional learning sessions have further enhanced this, equipping students with valuable social and emotional skills in a structured and supportive environment.

Importantly, we are also seeing increased House pride. Whether through friendly competition such as the College Athletics Carnival, shared activities, or simply wearing House colours, students are embracing their identity and contributing positively to the culture of their House.

While there is always more work to be done as we embed new structures, the early signs are incredibly encouraging. Thank you to our students, staff and families for your support in making this transition such a success.

PBL UPDATE

This term, 西瓜视频 College has made strong progress in embedding Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) across the school. Clear expectations have been established through our Behaviour Matrix, providing students with a shared understanding of what positive behaviour looks like in all settings. Staff have focused on explicitly teaching routines and reinforcing these expectations consistently. The introduction of acknowledgement strategies, such as recognition cards, has allowed us to celebrate students who demonstrate our values in action. As a result, we are seeing improved consistency, a stronger sense of safety and respect, and a more positive, predictable learning environment for all students.

TRAFFIC SAFETY AT THE COLLEGE

We ask all parents and carers to continue supporting the safety of our community during drop-off and pick-up times. The Kiss and Drop area can become congested, so it is important that vehicles move through promptly and do not stop or park for extended periods. Please follow road markings and directions, use designated parking areas where needed, and avoid blocking driveways or access points. We also encourage families to remind students to use safe crossing points and remain aware of traffic. By working together and modelling safe, respectful behaviour, we can ensure a calm and safe environment for all members of the 西瓜视频 community.

Praying for Peace

This week, at our executive meeting, it was my turn to lead prayer. I had had a video prayer on standby for when it was my next turn so I was looking forward to sharing it with my colleagues. As I went to write this article, I realised that I had not yet shared this prayer with the wider community. Pope Leo has a monthly 鈥淧ray with the Pope鈥� and it is a video recorded prayer; quiet, reflective and relevant to current society. Given everything that is happening in the world, it makes sense that his theme this month was praying for peace.

Last week we celebrated Harmony Day, a time of inclusion and belonging; of accepting others and creating peace in our communities. You might have heard the saying peace starts in the home. What does peace look like for us? What do we do to create peace in our community?

Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending the Leading Lights induction evening alongside fellow staff, past and present students, and the inductee鈥檚 families and friends. It was an evening filled with interesting biographies and a strong sense of community.

What stayed with me most from the evening were the stories. Each inductee had their career journey since leaving the College shared with the audience; pathways that were varied and, at times, unexpected. As teachers, we often spend such meaningful and intense periods of time with our students, yet we don鈥檛 always get to see where life takes them once they move on. Last Friday offered a special glimpse into those journeys.

What stood out was there was not a single, consistent path to success. The inductees had pursued different subjects at school and experienced varying levels of academic achievement while at school. Some had excelled academically, while others had simply worked hard to get through. And yet, despite these differences, there was a clear thread connecting them all.

Each story spoke of perseverance, the determination to keep striving to improve themselves, moving towards a goal, even when the path wasn鈥檛 straightforward. There was a strong sense of community shown in their involvement in opportunities and in their service to others which was evident in one way or another, and a genuine appreciation for the people who had supported them along the way. These qualities, more than any particular achievement, was highlighted in their success.

Head Senior Years

 Over the past week, our Year 9 students have been enthusiastically competing in a House Competition which is designed to promote our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) values. The competition will conclude at the end of classes this term (Wednesday 1pm).

Students have been earning House points in a variety of ways. Staff have been awarding PBL acknowledgement cards to recognise students who consistently demonstrate being Safe, Fair, Kind or Responsible. Commendations have also added to House scores, celebrating students鈥� ongoing positive behaviour.

Participation in whole-school events (including the recent Athletics Day) has also contributed to House totals. In addition, to ensure high standards are maintained, points have been deducted for uniform, chewing gum and mobile phone infringements. This balance of rewards and accountability reflects our commitment to fostering a positive and respectful school culture.

The winning Year 9 House will have the option to wear sports uniform during the first week of Term 2.

This competition is a pilot program and we are excited about the possibility of expanding it to the whole school from the beginning of next term.

 Term 1 is an extremely busy and exciting time in the sports department for both intra and inter-school events. Settling into our roles of sport captain and leader, we have thoroughly enjoyed the past few weeks preparing for many upcoming sporting opportunities. As captains, our goal is to get as many people involved in sport at 西瓜视频 and share all the fun and rewarding opportunities we have experienced over the past 6 years.

On Tuesday, we held our first whole school athletics carnival with the new six houses. The day was a great success, well done to Dominic House, who took home the win. We are really proud of everyone who gave their best efforts and scored points both on the track and by cheering for their house. An important aspect of our roles as sport captains this year is recognising that sport brings people together and creates a sense of belonging that we hope was felt by everyone. Further congratulations to our age group champions listed in the article below.

Last Friday, the sports department also had a significant involvement in Harmony Day, with 西瓜视频 Alumni Owen Foxwell coming down for a three-point shoot-out against our 6 houses. We were fortunate to help run this event, and it was great to see such a community form in the gym. It was also great to see many students getting involved in the various sports run at lunchtime.

This sense of belonging has also been felt by our EISM swimming squad and touch footy teams, who have each been training together for the past 6 weeks in preparation for their respective carnivals, which both ran on the 26th of March. 

Congratulations to the Swimming squad who came second in Division 2, and to Madison Brown who created a new EISM record in the Under 16 girls 50 metre backstroke! Congratulations also to the Under 15 boys and Under 13 girls who were the EISM age group champions!

Well done to everyone involved and we commend your commitment to 西瓜视频 sport.  

Weekly EISM has also been ongoing for all year levels. Congratulations to everyone on their efforts towards 西瓜视频 sports so far, and we can鈥檛 wait for what鈥檚 yet to come.

We are thrilled to announce that the Project Compassion goal has been a success!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our staff, students and community, we have not only met but exceeded our fundraising goal, totalling over $2,700.

This demonstrates the strong compassion that the 西瓜视频 community has for those in need, standing in solidarity with those suffering through conflict and poverty.

A warm thank you to all who have contributed to making this difference possible.

Looking Ahead: Next Term

As term 1 ends, our social justice efforts will turn to our Tinnies for Vinnies appeal.

Term 2, we will be collecting tinned food and non-perishable goods to support the vital work of the St Vincent de Paul Society to support our local community. Please keep this in mind over the break, and we will share more details on how to donate when students return.

NAPLAN 2026 - A Community Effort to Be Proud Of

We are delighted to share that our school has achieved an outstanding NAPLAN completion rate of 98.1%, with 2,235 tests completed across our student cohort. This result is a genuine reflection of the dedication and resilience shown by our students, who approached each assessment with focus and determination. It is a result worth celebrating, and one that speaks volumes about the character of our school community.

Behind every completed test was a team of committed staff who worked tirelessly to ensure the assessment period ran smoothly and that every student felt supported and prepared. The coordination involved across Year 7 and 9 students, classrooms, and IT support networks was no small feat, and we are incredibly grateful to all staff members who gave their time and energy to make it happen.

A heartfelt thank you also goes to our families and carers, whose encouragement at home made a real difference. NAPLAN is always a team effort, and this year's result is proof of what we can achieve when our whole school community works together. We look forward to sharing more information about results as they become available later in the year.

 A Positive Start to the Year in Physical Education

This term in Physical Education, our Year 7 and 8 students began the year with a Cooperative Games unit. Rather than focusing on winning or losing, these activities are all about working together, solving challenges and supporting teammates.

Through a range of team-building games and movement challenges, students practised important skills such as communication, teamwork, persistence and fair play. While there was plenty of fun and energy involved, the real goal was helping students learn how to encourage one another, stay positive when things don鈥檛 go to plan, and work together to achieve a shared goal.

Starting the year this way is intentional. It allows every student to feel successful in PE from the very beginning, regardless of their previous sporting experience or confidence in physical activity. In this unit, success isn鈥檛 about being the fastest or most skilful athlete, it鈥檚 about effort, participation, supporting others and being a positive teammate.

Teachers have already noticed the benefits. Classes quickly began to build trust, learn each other鈥檚 strengths, and feel more comfortable taking on challenges together. It鈥檚 also a great way for students to form new friendships and settle into the school year. Students shared that the activities helped them get to know one another, learn each other鈥檚 names and build connections with their classmates - all while still having plenty of fun.

Most importantly, cooperative games help create a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment, which sets the tone for Physical Education for the rest of the year. When students feel confident and included, they are far more likely to stay engaged in physical activity and enjoy being active. Ultimately, our goal is to help all students develop the confidence, skills and positive attitudes that will enable them to participate in and enjoy physical activity throughout their lives.

We鈥檝e loved seeing the teamwork, laughter and problem-solving on display, and we look forward to a fun and active year ahead in Physical Education.

We are excited to introduce two new courses within our Digital Technologies program: Year 9 Game Development and Year 10 Advanced Game Design. These subjects provide students with the opportunity to move beyond simply playing games and instead step into the role of creator, designer and developer.

Year 9 鈥� Game Development

In Year 9 Game Development, students are introduced to the foundations of coding and interactive design. They learn core programming concepts such as variables, conditionals, loops and functions, and apply these skills to create their own playable games. 

Using the GDevelop program, students explore how professional games are built, from structuring scenes and scripting mechanics to implementing scoring systems and user interfaces. 

A strong focus is placed on creativity and problem-solving. Students design their own characters, sprites and game assets, considering visual style, audience and gameplay experience. Along the way, they develop critical thinking skills as they test, debug and refine their projects. 

By the end of the course, students present their completed game as part of a digital portfolio, showcasing both their technical skills and creative process.

Year 10 鈥� Advanced Game Design

Advanced Game Design builds on the same core skills, offering students further opportunities to strengthen and refine their coding and design capabilities. In Year 10, students are encouraged to work with greater independence and confidence. 

Students continue developing games using Godot, applying programming fundamentals while exploring more detailed mechanics and polished gameplay elements. They place additional emphasis on thoughtful planning, storyboarding and structured design before moving into development. 

Character and asset design remain key components of the course, with students working to create cohesive visual styles and engaging game environments. They also reflect more deeply on player experience, usability and design improvements through testing and feedback.

Students will compile a portfolio of work that showcases their planning documentation, coding samples, asset creation and completed game. This portfolio demonstrates both their technical growth and creative development across the course. 

This portfolio not only demonstrates their learning progression but also provides a strong foundation for further studies in Digital Technologies, VCE pathways and future careers in software development, multimedia design and interactive media.

Why Game Design?

Game development is a powerful way to teach computational thinking, creativity and resilience. Students learn to approach challenges logically, break complex problems into manageable steps and persist through trial and error - something students of this age group often find quite challenging! 

Beyond technical skills, these courses foster collaboration, communication and project management, which are capabilities that are highly valued across all industries. Whether students pursue technology-related careers or not, the ability to design, build and present a digital product from concept to completion is an invaluable experience. 

Student engagement in both courses has been outstanding! Students are highly motivated by the opportunity to create their own playable games, and they demonstrate strong persistence and enthusiasm as they problem-solve, test, and refine their projects. The combination of creativity and coding provides an authentic, hands-on learning experience that keeps students actively involved and invested in their work. We look forward to seeing our students鈥� creativity come to life!

VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation Year 2 students have been covering a unit about Coaching Foundation Level Participants. We have been developing and practicing Coaching Drills in class time with our peers. On Friday 20th February and Friday 6th March we put our skills to the test by running a Tennis and Basketball Coaching clinic with Grade 3s from Great Ryrie Primary School. 西瓜视频 students worked in 5 groups to coach up to 12 students at a time for 60 minutes. These days are super rewarding for me as a Teacher as I get to see my students be the best version of themselves for an hour as they demonstrate kindness and support to each of the Primary School kids in their group. We are excited to be heading back over the road again Wednesday 25th March for a Soccer Training Session.

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

When we were practicing at school in class it was pretty easy for us to sit back and let one person do most of the work in our group. On the days that we did Tennis Volleys and Agility for Basketball we all couldn鈥檛 help but get really involved in the session. We were able to swap roles in our group each rotation and everyone had a shot at leading and supporting the group - James B.
In our sessions we were able to apply a variety of Coaching Communication styles such as Open & Closed Questions to check for understanding and Providing Feedback to improve the little kids skills in layups - Zoe B, Summer R & Fynn S.

My group ran a footwork and movement drill for Tennis. Marco was in his element and it was great to see him put on his swim teacher voice as he entertained the kids and the rest of us got to focus on Coaching - Fin M.

Thanks to Mr Harrington for organising the two days, we all really appreciate the trust he placed in us to represent 西瓜视频 well. Thanks to all the students and staff at Great Ryrie Primary School for making the time for us to get a really valuable experience - Lilly W.

Congratulations to all students who participated in Tuesday's Whole School Athletics Carnival!

It was a fantastic day, highlighted by students' incredible effort across all events, enthusiastic participation and an amazing display of house spirit from all six houses.

Students had the opportunity to compete in track events - 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m 1500m, as well as field events - Discus, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put and Triple Jump and other novelty events. It was exciting to see so many students being active and competing well for their Houses.  

Dominic House were our overall winners and the first inaugural champions of our six house carnival!

Thank you to all staff and students who helped make our 2026 Open Day a success. 

Last weekend, 西瓜视频 College opened their doors to the community to host the annual open day!! College Tours were run by 75 students across different year levels who welcomed families and showed them around the school, as well as musicians, dancers, hospitality and student representatives from language departments as well as the art department. We had a great turnout of new and prospective families, overall making the day a wonderful experience and highlighting the true value of what it means to be an 西瓜视频 College student.

🌍Harmony Day 2026 🌏

On Friday 20th March, the 西瓜视频 community came together to celebrate Harmony Day, recognising the importance of cultural diversity, inclusion and belonging. Grounded in the message that 鈥渆veryone belongs,鈥� the day invited students to reflect on their place within a globally connected community.

In the lead-up, students participated a THRIVE session focused on intercultural understanding and global citizenship. This session encouraged reflection on identity, culture, and how we foster respect and inclusion in our everyday interactions, setting a strong foundation for the day鈥檚 events.

On Harmony Day, the College was brought to life through a wide range of activities, performances and shared experiences that fostered connection across the community.

Harmony Day Passport

A key feature of this year鈥檚 celebrations was the expansion of the Harmony Day Passport across Years 7鈥�12. As students moved between activities, performances and stalls, they collected continent stamps, encouraging them to engage widely with the experiences on offer.

This initiative created a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere, with students actively participating across all areas of the College while strengthening a shared sense of belonging. It also ensured that students experienced a breadth of activities rather than remaining in one space.

Cultural Performances

Students experienced a series of performances celebrating cultures from around the world. The Seben Brothers鈥� Rhythms and Instruments of West Africa and the Vietnamese classical dance were standout moments, with students enthusiastically joining in, dancing, and helping create an energetic and inclusive atmosphere. It was particularly pleasing to see students actively engaging and making our performers feel welcomed and valued within the 西瓜视频 community.

African drumming further enriched the experience, immersing students in powerful rhythms and cultural expression.

Whole School Activities

The Whole School Mural offered a meaningful opportunity for students to reflect on their cultural journeys, exploring where their families come from, places they have visited, and destinations they hope to experience. The final piece became a powerful representation of the diversity within our community and the connections that unite us.

Students also engaged in a variety of interactive experiences, including bracelet making hosted by St Mary鈥檚 students, a sustainability stall, and Social Justice stalls in the ARC featuring Games of the World, where many students tried Chinese Chess. These activities encouraged both creativity and global awareness, while also providing opportunities for collaboration and reflection.

Food and Culture

International canteen specials allowed students to experience a range of cuisines, further immersing them in the cultural richness of the day. Social Justice stalls also offered treats such as Pocky and mochi, alongside a popular chocolate toss, combining celebration with fundraising for Caritas and supporting a meaningful cause.

Sport and Connection

Sport, led by our student leaders, played an important role in building connections across the College. Activities including volleyball, frisbee, table tennis, basketball and Indigenous sports encouraged teamwork, friendly competition and interaction between year levels. These experiences provided another avenue for students to connect beyond the classroom environment.

The enthusiasm and participation of students and staff made the day a genuine celebration of diversity. Harmony Day remains a valued part of our school calendar, reinforcing the importance of ensuring every member of our community feels that they belong.
