Our 西瓜视频 College Choir had the honour of leading this morning鈥檚 Graduate Teachers Commissioning Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral. Next week is Catholic Education Week, The 2026 theme is 'Christ beside me: Walking in the footsteps of Saint Patrick', celebrating the significance of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of our Melbourne Archdiocese. The naming of Saint Patrick鈥檚 Cathedral is a reminder that Australia鈥檚 migrants have always brought their religion with them and the strong Irish origins of the Church in Australia, also evident in the patron of Mannix House, Archbishop Daniel Mannix, whose birthday we celebrated last week. Both St Patrick and Archbishop Mannix鈥檚 legacies offer us powerful lessons in love, faith and courage. As part of last year鈥檚 Catholic Education Week, a specially commissioned icon of St Patrick was unveiled, with the symbolism of St Patrick鈥檚 special place for Melbourne Catholics as he holds our cathedral in his arms. .

Punctuality - early start Tuesdays

We ask for the support of families in ensuring students are not just at school on time but ready with all materials in their first scheduled class each day. While most days this is their morning Mentor time (8.50am), each Tuesday starts with period 1 classes at 8.30am. Early starts are not new for 西瓜视频: up to 2025, all students started Thursdays at 8:30am and Yr 10-12 students had multiple early starts every week. Unfortunately, in 2026 there has been a significant increase in late arrivals on Tuesdays (compared with Thursdays in 2025), particularly among Year 11 & 12 students. These late arrivals not only miss learning time but also disrupt others鈥� learning when they arrive late to the class. We thank families in advance for your efforts to maximise your child鈥檚 learning and value others鈥� learning time.

Open Day

On Sunday 15 March we will hold our Open Day from 11.30am - 2.30pm. We look forward to showcasing the College and welcoming both prospective families and any current families wishing to tour the campus with our student guides and/or speak with staff.

Applications for enrolment in Year 7 2028 are now open, and limited places are still available for 2027. Applications need to be made via the College website at with Year 7 2028 applications closing on Friday 14 August 2026. Student Progress Interviews

Student Progress Interviews, allowing parents to meet with subject teachers, will be held at the conclusion of Term1. To ensure the best meeting environment for families, we have made provision for in-person meetings and online meetings. Meetings will be held on the following dates:

Wednesday April 1 - In person/onsite between 2-8pm

Thursday April 2 - Online between 9am-3.30pm

Students will finish at 1pm on Wednesday April 1 and Thursday April 2 is a student free day.

Interviews can be booked through the Parent Access Module. Some subject teachers are in demand, so we will open bookings at 6pm on Wednesday 18 March for subject teachers, to give all families the same opportunity to book. Should you wish to meet the House mentor these bookings will open at 9am on Monday 23 March. We ask that you only make one booking per teacher even if the teacher has your child for two or more classes. 西瓜视频 expects, wherever possible, that the student will attend the interview with their Parent/Guardian.

Bookings are made through the Parent Access Module (PAM) using the username and password you have already set up.

In person meetings on Wednesday April 1 will be in the I building (Senior Years Building)

The meetings on Thursday April 2 will occur by video conferencing using Google Meet which can be accessed through PAM.

All details are explained in the Parent Teacher Module in PAM. The process for booking interviews remains the same - that is to log onto PAM and book through there (instructions are below).

To understand the progress of your son or daughter prior to the meeting you can investigate all of the teacher input through the Learning Areas menu for each of your children. There will also be an 西瓜视频 College School wide Digest emailed out on the 27 March that should inform you of the areas for discussion at the interviews. It is important that you have read this prior to meeting with teachers as it will provide the most up to date information regarding student progress.

NEEDOHS AND FIDGET TOYS

Please note that fidget toys (in particular Needohs) are only permitted in the classroom if the use of a fidget toy has been listed as a support in a student鈥檚 Personal Learning Plan (PLP).

This means that for the majority, students will not be permitted to bring fidget toys into the classroom. If this occurs, and this is not part of a student's PLP, it will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the school day.

Middle Years students have demonstrated character over the past few weeks. During the nationwide disruption to the NAPLAN online platform on Wednesday, students showed patience, flexibility and maturity. Despite the uncertainty and delays, they remained calm and followed instructions whilst supporting one another.

On top of the NAPLAN disruptions our Year 9 students have also shown resilience as they navigated increased noise in the Year 9 building. Students adapted quickly and continued to approach their work with a positive attitude. Their ability to respond calmly to these challenges is commended.

Music update

The last two weeks have seen the music department venture out to Camp ADANAC to visit the year 7 students at their year level camps. A mix of music teachers and student helpers ran instrument trials with all of the students, giving them a chance to play a variety of wind and string instruments. We hope that this experience sparked a new interest for some, or reaffirmed an existing passion for others.

We look forward to welcoming many new students to the College music department, and continue encouraging students to join the program throughout the year.

We are approaching the halfway point for Project Compassion. Each Wednesday, we have been collecting Gold coin donations through our mentor time, and through these donations alone, we have raised just over 25 percent of our fundraising goal.

 西瓜视频 College Native Ingredient Food Trail 

In exciting news, our application for a perpetual name for the 西瓜视频 Native Ingredient Trail garden, in language from Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Cooperation, has been approved. We will have an official naming ceremony where the name and new signage will be revealed in 2026.

The Native Ingredient Trail started in 2017 with the assistance of Karen Sutherland from Edible Eden Design, Karyn Myers (Environment and Sustainability Coordinator) and Owen Stott (Previous Director of the Wurundjeri Trade Training Centre) as well as student鈥檚 and staff of 西瓜视频 College.

The trail involves native food plants which are used in the culinary school in the Wurundjeri Trade Training Centre.

Over the last 8 years it has grown from a patch of grass to a mature nature trail. There are now 24 interpretive signs with QR codes to further information. These are not only used by our school but are shared with our sister school in France. The trail continues to be used as a site of biodiversity, learning, and for ingredients for the Wurundjeri Trade Training Centre, by the school students and community.

西瓜视频 has started off the year strong with the introduction of the new vertical pastoral system. We have seen more interconnectedness between year levels and a true sense of belonging, especially with the new houses. The house areas further align with this sense of community, with students in their respective houses and the college as a whole. The cohesion between year levels is beneficial for student welfare, promoting the values of 西瓜视频.

The Mannix Celebration Day passed just last week, recognising the new house and Daniel Mannix鈥檚 achievements as archbishop of Melbourne. It was a great way to celebrate our house spirit and come together as a community, especially before our inaugural athletics carnival. The vertical pastoral system has been coming along really well, and it has been great to see many students, in particular year 7s, making new friends and feeling more comfortable in the school.

With the halfway point of the term passing, many students completing a VCE subject are undertaking SACs. These assessment tasks are important, but it is also super vital to keep our well-being in check around this time. Even though the workload at the moment for many students, especially year 12s, is a lot, wellbeing is essential to look after. If you鈥檙e feeling burnt out, it鈥檚 okay to take a break and come back to your work; in fact, it can often make you more productive! 

It鈥檚 great to make time with your friends and family as well - no matter what year level you are in, as those social connections are what get you through high school. It is important to have a balance of work and rest to make sure we can try our best in everything we do.

Religion Report

In 2027, all MAC Schools, including 西瓜视频 College will be introducing a new Religious Education curriculum. This is currently being drafted. More detail will become available during the end of the year. The philosophy and topics that give you an understanding as to where MACS is guiding schools.

What鈥檚 Changing in RE?

The new RE curriculum helps young people understand life, faith, and the world around them in a deeper way. It鈥檚 designed for the world they live in today鈥攐ne that鈥檚 diverse, fast鈥慶hanging, and full of big questions about meaning and purpose.

How Learning Works
Prof Br David Hall FMS is leading the new curriculum for CAM and MACS. He said the work has three themes guiding the direction of the curriculum: Education as the Fabric of Evangelisation; Building Bridges, Not Walls; Human Dignity, Justice and Trust. Alongside these three themes Br David affirmed that Religious Education needs to be woven into the broader school environment in a way that fosters empathy, social responsibility, and attends to global realities where Catholic Social Teaching remains a crucial point of guidance.

Religious Education Learning Area Leader 

On Friday February 27, students from the Year 9 and 10 Fashion Design and Textiles classes immersed themselves in designer fashions at the National Gallery of Victoria International. Our scavenger hunt activity saw students compare the loud and playful fashions in the Let鈥檚 Party! Fashion for Kids exhibition with the bold and elegant haute couture of Dior in the NGV Collection. With this exposure to a wide range of fashions and styles, our students know that the sky is the limit for their own creations in the fashion classroom.

Student reflections from the day:

My favourite part of the fashion excursion was seeing the Dior exhibition because I loved the style of fashion and watching the video showing all of the techniques, time, effort and work that went into every piece of fashion. All the pieces there were really really pretty.

I found it interesting how all of the designs in the exhibition, although all different, showed a similar style and all looked cohesive. I also found it interesting how most of the colours used were reasonably neutral.

I enjoyed seeing the Christian Dior clothing because it was very chill and relaxing while also fun seeing and picking my favourites on the mannequins around the room. I also really enjoyed the kids room because of the interactive things like the photo booth.

My favourite part of today's excursion was seeing all the interesting and fancy clothing as well as hanging out with friends all day.

VET Sport, Aquatics and Recreation Year 1 students have been covering a unit about Officiating Skills and Knowledge. We have been developing and practicing Umpiring in class time with our peers. On Tuesday 3rd March and Tuesday 8th March we put our skills to the test by umpiring in a District Sports Tournament at Great Ryrie Primary School. 西瓜视频 students were allocated to Volleybounce and Softcrosse Games with a partner across each of the two days. It was great to hear very positive feedback from other Teachers and Parents who commended many of the students on their confidence and knowledge. We are excited to be heading back again in Term 2 for another Tournament.

I got the opportunity to umpire the District Grand Finals for both boys and girls. The boys game had a decisive winner who had been dominating most of the lead up games. The girls final saw an amazing 2 goal comeback by Great Ryrie to tie the game with just seconds remaining. Great Ryrie Primary went on to win in extra time - Mason C (Year 10)

I was rostered on to both Softcrosse and Volleybounce over my two visits. I had to help some students with explaining the rules and giving some leeway to those who might have needed it. I was impressed with how skilled some of the players were and how physical some of them can be. It was hard work umpiring, but very rewarding at the end of the day - Tom N (Year 11)

Thanks to Mr Harrington and Ms Campiciano for organising two great sessions for us to practice our umpiring. I had heard about these opportunities from others who had done the subject in previous years and I was really looking forward to it. We have our First Aid Course coming up in two weeks and I鈥檓 excited for URBNSurf later in the year. - Oliver C (Year 11)

On Tuesday, the 3rd of March, the year 12 Physics students, accompanied by Mr Gardiner and Mr Donohue, were lucky enough to go to Luna Park for an excursion. Each year, Luna park closes down to the public and instead opens their doors to Year 12 Physics students from all over Melbourne. We were able to get on all the rides, and enjoy ourselves. We were given a booklet containing a practice SAC that we were to finish before getting off the bus back at 西瓜视频, but we were able to complete the work, while also having fun! This week, we will use the practical physics knowledge that we gained from our excursion to complete our first SAC for Units 3/4 Physics. While it is a busy time for us Year 12s, we are grateful for opportunities like this that make learning both engaging and memorable.

VCE VM February 2026

The commencement of 2026 has been an exceptionally busy and productive period for the VCE VM students. The year began with strong momentum as students finalised employment arrangements, completed onboarding requirements and settled into balancing school commitments with structured workplace learning. Through tailored career planning, work experience and close mentoring 西瓜视频 has had strong success in transitioning 12 VCE VM students into School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) so far this year.

A key factor in this success has been the vital partnership between the College and local employers. businesses that open their doors to VCE VM students play an essential role in providing real life, hands-on learning experiences that cannot be replicated in a classroom. The employer鈥檚 willingness to invest time in mentoring young apprentices allows our students to complete their VCE VM certificate while undertaking a formally registered training contract at a Nationally Recognised Certificate level with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The collaboration between 西瓜视频, the student and employer creates a mutually beneficial pathway that strengthens the local workforce while empowering young people to transition confidently into their chosen trades.

This week we are excited to launch VM Beans Caf茅, run by our Year 11 VCE VM students. The caf茅 opened on Monday and ran for 3 days this week and will operate throughout the year whenever the Caf茅 9 program is not running.

VM Beans Caf茅 is part of the students鈥� Work Related Skills (WRS) project. Over the past few weeks, students have been working together to build their caf茅 from the ground up. They have created the brand, designed the logo, developed the menu, and organised weekly roles to ensure the caf茅 runs smoothly.

Through this experience, students are developing transferable workplace skills including leadership, time management, teamwork, collaboration, communication, autonomy, and the ability to work under pressure. It is a genuine example of applied learning in action, where students are given the opportunity to take ownership, solve problems, and bring their ideas to life.

This caf茅 is truly student-driven, and the pride and energy they have invested into creating this experience is something special. They have also crafted a unique and delicious menu, with something for everyone.

VCE Dance VCAA Top Class Dance excursion

Across the 23rd February - 4th March 286 Year 7s experienced a fun-filled 3 days at Camp ADANAC in Yarra Junction. The Camp theme focused on developing a sense of belonging as students spent over 50 hours with members of their house, while developing new and strengthening existing friendships.
Activities included: Flying Fox, Low Ropes, Volleyball, Hut Building, Archery, Waterslide, Tread Wall, Arrow Soft Archery and Mountain Boarding.
The first night featured a fun round of Trivia with many different exciting challenges in between rounds - the one question that no one was able to answer is 'Who is the jokemaster?'.
The annual Kickball Tournament was a highlight each evening with students and staff having plenty of fun and laughs together - tired legs struggled back up the hill as the sun went down each night.

On the final day the Music Department popped in for a visit, everyone had the chance to try an instrument and have a chat about how to get involved in an amazing part of College life.
The weather was not on our side this year for some of the days, but we were very impressed with students' efforts to persevere and make the best out of the situation.

Thank you to the Staff and former students who gave up their time to support each and every student to make lifelong memories.

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

Mikaela L - Chisholm  

Chisolm and Dominic camp was an amazing experience. I met so many new people and me and my friends had an amazing time! I'm definitely going to miss sleeping in a cabin with my friends and the camp food. The hardest part for me was probably being in a new school camp with people I don't really know but I ended up making some new friends and meeting new teachers and staff. I definitely would love to go back to Camp ADANAC because it was an amazing experience overall.

To be honest, before we went to camp I was really scared and wanted to stay home. When we went to camp, I felt very welcomed by the ADANAC staff. I loved staying up late and playing card games and simply just talking with my cabin mates. I also really loved all the food and it was definitely my favourite camp food. My favourite was the taco bowl or the sub. My favourite activity was the water-slide. The day we had to do it was raining so it got cancelled and it was optional the next day. I did it because I knew I would regret it. The lake was so cold and I was going really fast but I still loved it. My advice for next year Year 7s is to not worry if you don't have any friends because I can guarantee that you WILL make friends at camp. Put yourself out there in camp and try new things. I really loved my year 7 camp and I would do it again if I could.

My Camp Adanac experience was an unforgettable one. We have all made memories that will stay with us forever. For me, some of those memories were the waterslide, although walking up that hill seven times was nowhere near us fun, the zipline and spending time with all my friends.

I would like to thank all the student leaders guiding us through our activities, and especially Amy, my group leader. Together we made memories that we will never forget. I would also like to thank all staff who were involved in ensuring our first 西瓜视频 Camp was the best it could possibly be. Thank you again.

My favourite moment with my mates was playing basketball. My favourite activity was the waterslide because I could go really fast. I will miss socialising with other people I don't really socialise with. My advice to the year 7's next year is to try everything.

My favourite activity at camp was Gaga, Gaga is my favourite because we got to play all together as a year 7 house colour, and we made some new friendships while playing Gaga.

I really enjoyed camp, it was a great way to meet new people and make awesome memories and inside jokes. My favourite activities were Soft Archery where you played an archery version of dodgeball (and I infamously accidentally shot the instructor in the head with a soft arrow), and the flying fox which felt like I was flying through the trees (while screaming....very loudly). I also highly enjoyed watching Mr Storey go down the waterslide. Thank you to all the teachers and camp staff who made this possible! It was a great experience and I am very excited for all the high school camps to come!!!

A new debating season began on 11 March.

On Wednesday, the 西瓜视频 team once again became a part of the rich tapestry that is the debate. In this spirited competition, we saw some excellent points from all teams, showing dedication from all teams. The 西瓜视频 team which fetched a few brand new members gave an amazing performance, however in the end the judges decided that it would be a very close victory for the opposition, as in their ruling the adjudicators awarded Tintern 226 points & 西瓜视频 223. In all it was conceded to be an excellent and exciting evening by all who attended.

鈥淪tarting off the year, our first debate has shown me just how far our members have come- both new and old. I鈥檓 excited to realise our full potential!鈥� Nate O

Debate club students

On Tuesday 3rd March, our community came together to celebrate Mannix Day - a special occasion that allowed us to reflect on the spirit and values that define our House. It was fantastic to see so many staff and students proudly wearing a touch of purple, a simple but powerful symbol of our shared identity and pride in being part of the Mannix community as we begin what we are calling the 鈥榊ear of Purple Reign鈥�.

On the day, students were encouraged to get involved by helping create a House Chant and designing ideas for a House Mascot. One of the highlights of the day was our Liturgy, where we gathered as a House to pause and reflect on the values that Archbishop Daniel Mannix stood for: community, integrity, resilience, excellence and respect. These values continue to guide us not only in our learning, but also in the way we support one another and contribute positively to our school.

Mannix Day marks just the beginning of many more opportunities throughout the year for us to come together, celebrate our achievements and continue building the Mannix spirit.

STUDENT REFLECTIONS:

Mannix day was a great day to kickstart our house events and celebrations. Everyone in Mannix was able to gather as a collective in the chapel for a morning liturgy, it was really great to see everybody representing the house with a touch of purple! I think the best part that came out of our liturgy was building the foundation for the house and it's culture, which I'm very excited to see continue in house events like our Athletics Carnival coming up on the 24th of March. It was so amazing to see our house come together to celebrate Mannix Day. It reminded us of Daniel Mannix and his teachings about looking out for one another. I can't wait to see what comes next. Mannix Day was not only a Celebration of Daniel Mannix, but a celebration of a new start, a new beginning. Mannix Day kick-started the progress of belonging and events that will lead Mannix into a house that all people part of Mannix house will enjoy being a part of, but also other houses will look at and feel like they want to be in Mannix house. - Kohen, Year 8 Mannix Student Leader.

Mannix day was a really exciting time as we were not only the first house to have our celebration but it was our first whole house event! We spent our Thrive period engaging in a house liturgy where we learnt more about Daniel Mannix and his values, so we were able to get insight on who our house was named after. It was just an overall exciting day to come together and celebrate the house that didn't exist just a few months ago.
