Justice, Compassion & Spirituality

Last Sunday commemorated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, originating with St Helena鈥檚 search for the 鈥榯rue cross鈥� in the 4th century. As Christians, the cross represents the ultimate expression of love and 鈥楩aith in Action鈥�; as Jesus literally put his life in God's hands for our salvation. This feast encourages us to step back and exercise wonder, to consider what is beyond our daily lives, just as our 西瓜视频 Values do. The last fortnight has shown the many ways in which our community both looks beyond our own walls and ensures we are living our faith through actions, particularly embodying the 西瓜视频 Values of Justice, Compassion, Stewardship & Spirituality:

• Our Term 3 College Mass was a beautiful celebration focussed on the Season of Creation, with links to our College鈥檚 strong focus on sustainability & Stewardship
• Last Wednesday evening鈥檚 Family Mass for Father's Day provided the chance for families and students to express their Spirituality through liturgy, with particular thanks to the Year 11 EDGE & Year 10 Liturgical Music classes.
• The student-run Fairtrade Fair last Friday not only raised awareness for economic and social justice, it highlighted sustainable products and ethical workplace practices.
• This week began with staff leaders volunteering for the Ice-Bucket Challenge for MND awareness while raising funds for Red Dust. delivers programs co-designed in partnership with remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to enrich lives, improve health and strengthen the future of Indigenous youth and families.

The unsurprising simplicity of academic success

Earlier this week, research was publicised on 鈥榯he key to VCE success鈥�. The results are unsurprising to our College and staff, reinforcing the messages emphasised to our VCE students over the past few weeks. The two key ingredients? Hard work and completing many practice exam questions. The report highlighted a direct correlation between the number of practice exam questions completed and higher VCE Study Scores. to read the report summary.

For our VCE students, the upcoming Trial exams (28 Sept - 2 Oct) are just the beginning of an intensive period of applying their learning to gain feedback from their teachers. Please keep our students in your prayers as they navigate their final weeks of schooling.

On Wednesday 10 September, 西瓜视频 College achieved first place in the EISM Division 1 EISM Cross Country carnival. Congratulations to the many students involved and to the staff who supported them throughout their training and on the day.

Key Dates for end of Term 3 / start of Term 4

Last week our College community gathered to celebrate excellence from across the year in all its many forms. The whole school assembly reminded us that excellence is not limited to one pathway or achievement, but flourishes in vast experiences. Whether through academics, sport, performing arts, leadership, sustainability, or service, every student has the opportunity to find their place and contribute in meaningful ways. Evie Evans and Joseph Campbell, our College Captains reminded us, true excellence is about showing up each day, building positive habits, and striving to be our best.

The breadth of items shared highlighted this beautifully. We recognised outstanding results in Science by Luke Dixon, Benson Xiang and Kohen Bell in Year 7 and Jack Amarego and Hugh Mercuri in Yrs 8 and Yr 10 respectively, in the National Junior Science Olympiad. Rice House were congratulated for their victory in the inaugural Inter-House Science Competition. Awards were also presented to Tom Bronstring, Lucas Dodds, Giovanni Meekhel, Janna Phan who exemplify the 西瓜视频 Learner Attributes, demonstrating leadership, open-mindedness, and courage.

Our VCE-VM Captains, Jessica Blackman and Maddox Sturdy, acknowledged individuals for their success in apprenticeships, workplace learning and community projects, showcasing applied learning pathways in action. Sustainability projects such as composting modules and 鈥淐arbon Cops鈥� reflected the passion and innovation of students leading environmental change. Sport and Performing Arts were equally celebrated, from EISM premierships, state & Australian-level representation to this year鈥檚 musical The Wedding Singer, along with acknowledgment of the many dance, drama and music performances.

Year 8 leaders, Hayden Ennor and Georgie North-Coombes also shared highlights from their camp and CONNECT8 program, while our Faith Captain, Ruth Tawng and Social Justice Captain Grace Rider shared opportunities for students to become involved in such as the Australian Catholic Youth Festival and the Fairtrade Fair.

The assembly was a powerful reminder that when the diversity of talents, interests and contributions are celebrated, our community is strengthened. The occasion truly showcased such a vibrant display of student effort and achievement. In addition to providing students with invitations to join dance, drama, social justice and sustainability clubs. Enjoy the photos from the assembly, capturing these special moments of recognition.

 As Term 3 comes to a close, it鈥檚 a great time to reflect on the growth, effort and achievements of our Middle Years students over the past few weeks.

Our Year 7 and 8 students have been working with determination to meet the goals they set earlier in the semester. Whether it was improving their learning habits, staying organised or challenging themselves in the classroom it has been great to see their progress.

Meanwhile, our Year 9s have wrapped up STRIVE Week which is a fantastic opportunity to develop independence, resilience and responsibility. From city experiences to school camp, students stepped out of their comfort zones and embraced the chance to learn more about themselves and each other outside of the classroom.

As we head into the break, we encourage all students to take the time to rest and recharge. Term 4 brings fresh opportunities and the chance to finish the year on a strong and positive note.

It is important to return ready to make the most of every moment in Term 4. Have a mindset of 鈥榳hat can I do to get the most out of Term 4?鈥� instead of 鈥業 will wait until next year to put in a few changes.鈥�

Congratulations to April Shultz on her exceptional achievement.

April submitted a creative and inspiring design that reflected the plight of the Mountain Pygmy Possum - an outstanding accomplishment. A special feature that impressed the judges was the accuracy of the habitat she created. April thoughtfully included the Mountain Pygmy Possum鈥檚 primary food source, the Bogong Moth, along with the key vegetation these possums depend on for survival. By highlighting the Bogong Moth鈥攚hich, like the Pygmy Possum, is also under threat鈥攈er design powerfully illustrated the delicate balance between species and the importance of protecting ecosystems.

April will enjoy a Cafe9 experience in term four for her superb efforts.

The Mountain Pygmy Possum is found in the area of Australian alps. It eats Bogong moths and they usually migrate to the Australian Alps just as the Mountain Pygmy Possums wake up from hibernation. But lately the Moths have not been migrating and are staying around the city because of all the lights of the city. What we can do to help is use less lights at night when they are not necessary. Spring around the college

Spring is in full bloom around the college. Blossom is on our fruit trees, the leaves are returning to the fig trees and lemon trees are overloaded. The chicken are getting ready for a new home with the building program starting. They look forward to a bigger and better space in the future. Cluck Norris, Janet, Popcorn (Poppers) and Nugget wish everyone a safe and restful term 3 break.

Environment and Sustainability Coordinator

It鈥檚 been a busy few weeks for our Year 12 cohort as we prepare for our final SACs and exams. During these challenging times, we鈥檙e focusing on trusting ourselves, drawing on support, and managing our workloads. With many subjects now past the halfway point of their outcomes, it鈥檚 encouraging to remember that a significant portion of our marks is still ahead of us. This is our chance to secure the strongest position possible for the remainder of the year.

At the same time, our time at 西瓜视频 is slowly coming to an end. Our cohort has been reflecting on all the years we have spent at this school and all the lasting memories we have created. This year has been a rollercoaster; our studies have been difficult yet rewarding (with our toughest half yet to come). The excitement of winning the EISM Grand Finals and celebrating the incredible performances of The Wedding Singer have brought joy and vibrancy to our experience. As School Captains, our focus on leadership has been our guiding goal. At the start of the year, we set out to amplify student voice, support mental health, and foster a community built on a strong culture of connection and 西瓜视频 Spirit.

We have targeted our goal of promoting student voice by running our Summit Leadership programs, which allow all student leaders to get together once a term to discuss their goals for the year and plan how they can be put into action. Through this initiative, students have developed new leadership skills, broadened their perspectives, and embraced feedback as a tool for creating meaningful change.

We also created an environment for sharing positive mental health by focusing on supporting each other, having safe and kind interactions and encouraging others to be their best. Through our R U OK week, positive affirmation walls, blue tree projects, emphasising it's not week to speak and contributing to our community through social justice, we can continue to build a place where all individuals can understand its OK to not be OK.

The culture at 西瓜视频 has been fostered through our weekly Physical Fridays run by our two Sports Captains in Gabby Linton and Alovi Gnomes. As the completion included students from 10-12, we were able to bond over sports like Ultimate Frisbee and Volleyball, as well as getting in some physical activity at lunchtimes. Through our music performances, drama, sustainability programs, social justice initiatives, academic competitions, 西瓜视频 clubs and sporting achievements within the whole school, it's been amazing to watch the growth of our culture and see individuals either develop their strengths or try something new to become the best versions of themselves.

By reflecting on all of this, we can truly see how far our school has come this year. Now, especially for our Year 12 cohort, it鈥檚 time to finish strong. We encourage everyone to 鈥渂uy in,鈥� immerse themselves in their studies, and put their best foot forward as we approach the finish line. It鈥檚 important to recognise the role of sacrifice in reaching our goals. Every late night of study, every extra effort, every moment we鈥檝e stayed back with teachers or chosen discipline over comfort has shaped who we are today. It鈥檚 time to invest in our future and have the dedication now, so we can open opportunities, build resilience, and leave a legacy of hard work for those who follow.

Let鈥檚 continue to support one another, celebrate our achievements, and leave 西瓜视频 knowing that we鈥檝e given our very best. The lessons we鈥檝e learned here, both in and out of the classroom, will stay with us well beyond these walls and guide us into the next chapter of our lives.

 Fairtrade Fair 2025

 On Friday 12th September, our school community came together for our annual Fairtrade Fair, supporting the.

It was a fantastic afternoon, full of energy, colour, and fun, with stalls offering handmade crafts, delicious treats, Fairtrade goods, and second-hand books and clothes.

A huge thank you to all the staff and students who contributed their time and energy to make the event such a success. Your hard work and commitment made the day enjoyable, smooth-running, and memorable for everyone.

Special thanks to the following students for their help in running our stalls and activities:

The funds we raised will go directly to OTDF to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in accessing quality education throughout their school journey. The final total will be shared next term once all contributions are tallied.

Beyond raising funds, the Fair was a wonderful reminder of the power of community. Seeing students and staff come together to support others and make ethical choices was inspiring. It鈥檚 a great example of how small actions鈥攍ike choosing Fairtrade or donating items鈥攃an really make a difference.

We鈥檙e already looking forward to more opportunities to get involved in social justice initiatives next term. May you all have a wonderful and restful holiday break!

 It was a hugely busy week last week for our instrumentalists.

We started early on Monday morning, when members of our Illuminate and Ablaze choirs performed at the opening of the MACS Flourishing Learner Conference at Marvel Stadium. Our amazing students all turned up for their 6am departure from school, and represented our College so well in front of hundreds of MACS principals and staff.

This was followed on Monday afternoon by the whole-school Mass, where the Mass Choir and Orchestra performed, supporting and enhancing the service with seamless music and voice work.

Then on Monday night we held our Senior Showcase, where our senior ensembles performed their current repertoire for family and friends. The highlight of the evening is the Massed Ensemble, where instrumental students from across all school years join together for a blockbuster finale. This year it was a Blues Brothers Medley, and to top it off we were also joined by the Dance Ensemble for a full extravaganza. It was a huge day for students and staff, but it wasn鈥檛 quite over yet!

This massive day was followed by Tuesday, where we reprised the Blues Brothers Medley at the whole-school assembly. This assembly also featured performances by vocalists, soloists and small groups, and finished with the Pep Band accompanying the student dismissal.

We are so proud of our instrumental students, for their dedication, their practice, their good humour, and the way that they make College events solemn, weighty and entertaining, depending on requirements. Thank you to you all, and of course to the parents and staff for supporting the role of music in your school lives.

A big shout out too for the music staff for bringing it all together.

A focus on Year 7 Science 鈥� 鈥楢 call to Action鈥�

 This year, the Year 7 Science team has placed a strong emphasis on making learning meaningful and engaging by immersing students in authentic and purposeful investigation. With a focus on inspiring curiosity and deepening scientific understanding, the team has integrated real world issues to highlight the dynamic nature of Science in everyday life.

A major highlight was the introduction of a new project that culminated in a field-based learning experience at Healesville Sanctuary. Students engaged in a rich learning sequence that combined explicit teaching with project-based learning. Each student selected a local Australian species whose survival is under threat, then developed a targeted conservation strategy. They were guided to brainstorm, research, propose, and critically evaluate their ideas through the lens of biological and environmental stewardship.

The level of student engagement and the quality of their final presentations reflected their deep connection with the topic and their growing awareness of the importance of biodiversity and conservation. The Healesville Sanctuary visit brought their learning to life as every student was able to observe and reflect on the uniqueness and value of their chosen species through an informed lens. Staff were heartened to receive extremely positive feedback from Zoos Victoria. Their recognition of the students鈥� commitment and connection has paved the way for further collaboration with this worthy organisation.

In addition, this experience supported intercultural learning, with students gaining an understanding of Indigenous Australian perspectives on Caring for Country, fostering a more holistic appreciation of the natural world and our responsibility to protect it. It was a powerful example of how Science skills can be used as a tool for real-world change.

Last Monday night, students from our Year 11 and Year 12 VCE Dance classes performed their Cohesive Composition Solo and the Year 11 Unit 2 Group Learnt Work Dance. For Year 12 students this was their final performance before completing their VCAA Performance Examinations in October.

The Cohesive Composition Assessment asks students to convey a theme, character or narrative through movement. Students undertook a period of choreography in Term 3 to create their solo dance works that must convey a selected intention through their choice in movement vocabulary, clear structure through arrangement of their movements, skills in manipulation of choreographic devices, level, direction, dimension, focus and artistry which includes facial expression, focus and projection.

The Learnt Work Assessment focuses on performance within a group setting where the choreography is taught by a selected choreographer. Dancers are assessed on their ability to execute the set choreography, apply correct dance technique, accurately recreate the timing, variations in time, space and energy, maintain group formations and apply a range of performance skills in their artistry.

The VCE Showcase was a nervous but fun experience, backstage we were all having fun and helping each other with makeup and hair. Onstage I got to have my own fun with my Dr Jekyll and Hyde solo, I was able to make a creepy-ish dance that was entertaining to make and let me do something that interested me more then the normal happy solos I have done in the past. Our group dance had us smiling and laughing at seeing each other in wigs and was a wonderful way to end the night. - -Eleanor

Participating in the VCE Dance Showcase was an incredible experience. We were able to show our solo's to family and friends and have all our hard work pay off. We were also able to support our peers as they did their solos. It allowed us to express our personal style and learn more about stage presence. The group dance was a great opportunity as it showcased our hard work this term, through this we developed new skills and gained confidence in our abilities.- Emma O

The VCE Dance Performance night was an amazing night to display the hard work of the year 11 and 12 dance students. It was particularly special watching the year 12s dance for the last time. I particularly loved the camaraderie between everyone backstage and how supportive everyone was of each other. Performing my composition solo about a Broken Doll was such a joy to show to my friends and family in addition to the whole audience. The night was fantastic! - Taiya

VCE Dance Night gave us the chance to choreograph unique and original solos based on specific themes, linking our movement to tell a story, which is something a lot of us had never done before. Because of the shorter term, it pushed us to develop our ability to pick up choreography quickly before being able to produce the final result on stage. It was also interesting to see how others interpreted different themes, and their own styles. Overall it was a good night to bond with both classes. - Charlotte

I really enjoyed the challenge of presenting a dance that showcased the five stages of grief. Throughout the term I researched about the stages of grief and worked to implement new skills into my solo that conveyed my intention. VCE dance is a great opportunity to learn new dance skills, concepts, work and support each other as a dance group. - Harlow

Throughout Terms 2 and 3, Year 10 students had the opportunity to give back to the community by volunteering at the Great Ryrie Primary School Homework Support Group. This program is for Great Ryrie students who have been in Australia less than five years and who are provided some extra opportunities to develop their literacy and numeracy skills.

I really enjoyed helping at Great Ryrie, seeing the kids laugh and play was definitely a highlight, especially considering I will probably be doing more of this sort of thing if I decide to continue my teaching journey. Although the program has not impacted my choice in my future career path, it was quite challenging keeping the kids doing what they needed to be doing. Overall, it was an incredibly enjoyable experience and I learned a lot! - Ewan

This year, I participated in the Great Ryrie program, and it was one of my favourite school experiences. I enjoyed everything, the kids were adorable and so funny, and it was so interesting how they taught these kids, as well as adapted such tasks to little kids. I learnt a lot, as I learnt how they run their classes, and how they focus on certain topics for some weeks. The program definitely influenced me to pursue primary teaching, since I enjoyed it so much and I had such a bond with these kids. I didn't have many challenges (apart from learning, I definitely have to work out more, these kids can run!!). All together, it was such an amazing experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat. - Tianna

Intercultural Learning Coordinator

Our VCE Vocational Major students have recently completed their Community Project as part of Personal Development Skills (PDS) Unit 4. This project required students to design and implement a complex initiative that showcased their organisation, teamwork, communication, and collaboration skills.

An important element of the project was to engage with a community group and raise awareness about homelessness in our community. Students worked in teams to make a meaningful contribution:

• Mindful Dogs 鈥� Sold hotdogs at lunch time to raise funds for a local homelessness charity.
• Pizza People / Cookie Monsters 鈥� Baked cookies and coconut balls which were donated to a local community shelter caf茅 to be shared with those in need.
• Helping Hands 鈥� Prepared and delivered meals to the grandmother of a Year 12 student, who volunteers with a local community group, and to members of the community experiencing hardship. This simple act of kindness was deeply appreciated 鈥� recipients were moved to tears by the generosity and effort of our students.

This project highlighted the power of young people working together to make a difference and demonstrated the importance of compassion, connection, and community support.

西瓜视频 had a very successful day at the EISM Cross Country, held at Ruffey Lake Park on September 10th, achieving a clean sweep for the first time since 2007! Our runners delivered outstanding performances across the board, with the Boys taking out the Champion title (tied with Donvale Christian College), the Girls securing the Champion title, and 西瓜视频 proudly crowned Overall Champion.

Our students have been working incredibly hard 鈥� training before school, during recess, and at lunch 鈥� and they truly deserve every second of this victory. Congratulations to all students who competed on their incredible effort and achievement.

A huge thank you also goes to the staff who dedicated their time to training and supporting the students. This success would not have been possible without you.

This week our school community came together to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge. At lunchtime, students and staff gathered in the Forum to cheer on the brave teachers who put their hands up to be drenched in icy water to raise awareness and funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

A huge shout-out goes to our Year 11 VCE VM students, who designed and created eye-catching posters to raise awareness and generate interest, sold raffle tickets to raise money, and helped set up the event.

The atmosphere was electric as the school captains drew the names of students who had donated to the cause, giving them the chance to pour the icy water over their teacher of choice! There was plenty of laughter and applause from the onlooking staff and students as bucket after bucket of freezing water was tipped over the 7 courageous and much loved staff. The soaked teachers were happy to enjoy a glimmer of spring sunshine, which helped warm them up after the icy experience before they returned to class!

Thanks to the generosity of our students, staff, and families, we raised over $370 which will be donated to the . Events like this remind us that when we come together, we can make a real difference, while also celebrating bravery and bringing fun and laughter to our school community.

For the last 2 years 西瓜视频 has been fielding a team of students in an Interschool Mountain Bike competition against students from all over the state. Last week we came back to this competition as the two-time defending Champions with a team of 18 students who all regularly ride and race at numerous tracks around the state.

The students have a total of 4.5 hours to complete as many runs as possible over the three trails, with everyone鈥檚 best time added together to give them an overall position in the age categories. Throughout the day students regularly check the live timing to see where they are standing and decide which trails they need to complete again in hope of improving their overall positioning. Points are awarded for all students and those in the top 10 get bonus points which go towards the Schools Championship Award. Although we had a fantastic display by all students we ended up in 2nd overall, a great job with numerous issues including some last minute injuries not allowing students to attend.

In January, sisters Abigail and Amelia Watson earned selection to represent Australia at the ICF Junior & U23 Wildwater World Championships 2025. In July they travelled to Solkan, Slovenia for the event. 
Competing in the U18 category, the sisters took part in both the Wildwater Sprint and Classic events in K1 and C2 disciplines. The conditions were particularly challenging due to a heatwave affecting the competition. Despite this, Abigail and Amelia delivered strong performances. The highlight of their competition was an 8th place finish in the C2 Sprint finals and a 9th place finish in the C2 Classic finals.
This experience allowed them the chance to compete against some of the world's best junior paddlers, as well the opportunity to make new connections and experience Slovenian culture. Looking back on the event, both girls are looking forward to the next steps in their paddling careers, having gained valuable international experience in the process.
